Business Roundtable with the Government of Malta

Business Roundtable with the Government of Malta

Can the EU emerge stronger? Will the economies manage to improve the business climate? What are the priorities of the newly elected Maltese government?

The forthcoming Business Roundtable with the Government of Malta hosts Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his Cabinet Ministers and exceptional speakers, such as the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States Nabil Elaraby, The Rt Hon Lord Mandelson and fmr Prime Minister of Italy Mario Monti.

John Peet, Europe editor of The Economist and John Andrews, Consultant Editor of The Economist will be co-chairing Malta's first Government Roundtable and the main objective of this event is to analyse current trends, share significant knowledge and insights, evaluate challenges that lie ahead and show ways to invigorate growth for Malta and Europe in general. With the participation of The Government of Malta

The Economist is holding the round table conference in Malta on March 6 and 7, the first Economist round table to be held on the island. Launching the conference on January 24th last, Parliamentary Secretary for Economic Growth Edward Zammit Lewis said the government was approached by The Economist in November and it accepted to be part of this event. The conference "The Economist business round table with the government of Malta. Invigorating investment and growth" is expected to discuss, among other topics, IT, tourism, financial services and aviation. The Economist consulting editor John Andrews said it was to the company’s discredit that it was only its first round table in Malta and he hoped it would not be the last.

“We’ll try to focus on Malta and europe in terms of investment opportunities and Malta’s place between the EU and the Mediterranean,” he said. This would be a huge opportunity of getting more economic cooperation within the Mediterranean region. “It is important that Malta punches above its weight,” he said adding that it seems that it had done so having come out of the financial crisis practically unscathed. “This is a tribute,” he said. The conference, Mr Andrews said, would serve for others to learn from Malta’s experience and for Malta to learn from others.
